Quality Content

Quality websites must have quality content, so what is quality content? Here is my version:

  1. Unique – Unique content can get traffic easily from search engines.
  2. Useful – Make the visitors happy.
  3. Regularly updated – Make the search engines and visitors happy. Daily update is highly recommended, less frequent is ok, but weekly update is necessary.

Frequent update is very important to please the search engines, especially Google. I tried to update my FreeBSD Blog regularly since the beginning. After 6 months, Google started to give the site great rankings, not only the main keywords have no. 1 rankings, but also almost any new posts were ranked in the top 10. It’s simply amazing to me. But unfortunately I can’t keep up posting, the ranking of the individual posts has dropped a lot.

I also have another website with more than 100 unique articles, but I put them online in one time, never got good traffic.

Both websites are listed in DMOZ and have similar link popularity, Google seems to like the first one much more.

It is also important to pick up a right topic, if the topic is too competitive such as personal finance, most subjects have been written and rewritten hundreds of times, even unique content is hard to get search engine traffic. I would add the last condition to quality content:

4. Not in very competitive topics.
