I have been trying to build quality websites since the beginning, but all my efforts seemed to be totally in vain. I know the old saying “Content is the King”, I also truly believe it, but I didn’t really understand it until recently, that’s why I took a very different path – “Link is the King”. I used to think they are the same thing – Because a site has good content, it gets good links, hence good ranking. Sounds correct, right? Not at all!
When came to my own sites, I cared about search engine ranking so much like many (probably most) other webmasters, as a result, most time and money were spent on link building. But I still don’t have quality websites even they got top rankings, because I ignored the most important part – content. Without solid content, ranking is completely dependant on search engines and very vulnerable.
In the last three months, I visited the website marketplace (sitepoint, digitalpoint, namepros, dnforums and webhostingtalk) several times a day and bought a few websites (5 listed in DMOZ), also built a couple of new sites. Now, when I look at these websites, none of them are real quality because they don’t have quality content. If I keep “Content is the king” in mind and take it very seriously, there is not a single quality site on these forums.
I also spent a lot on link building. All these made me think: “What if spent all the money on content?” I have no doubt that I have made a quality website.
