Over the past few years, I have witnessed a few paid directories that were very successful at one time, but failed in the end. The only one survived is botw.org, AFAIK. Their promotions are very interesting, they used different strategies but basically was getting high PRs and tried not to make Google unhappy at the same time.

Why Paid Directory Always Fail?
Alive Blog Directory
Alive directory has created a section specially for blogs. Has been watching the directory since it was started, I was always amazed that it’s growing so fast. No doubt the owner is very good at website promotions. Submitting blogs to such a blog directory a is a good practice as it’s one-time payment.
Busy Webmaster
Some webmasters seem to be extremely busy, I simply can’t imagine how busy they are. Submitted two links to a paid-only directory a few days ago, after submission I got the message that the links would be approved within 7 business days. I for one don’t understand why it takes so long for a directory with few listings. It’s not over yet, logged in today and I got another message: “Please allow ten business days for submissions to be reviewed and published”.
Blog Directory List
Most general directories seem useless to me, my websites are either hard to get in, or buried very deeply along with hundreds of other sites in the same category.
Niche categories should be liked more by the search engines. Here is a blog directory list, submit to them if you have blogs.
