Targetable AdSense Channels

I thought new Adsense features should always increase the revenue, but targetable AdSense channels didn’t work for me – tried it for one month and the income dropped 20% despite of better ads integration. I wasn’t sure of the reasons but after I hid the channels from advertisers, the picture becomes very clear.

Google Analytics and Smarty

Some popular PHP scripts such as phpLD and PHP Classifieds were developed based on Smarty, adding Analytics code is a bit tricky. The best way is using the tag literal, enclose Analytics code with {literal} and {/literal}.

The following text is from Smarty online manual:

{literal} tags allow a block of data to be taken literally. This is typically used around Javascript or stylesheet blocks where {curly braces} would interfere with the template delimiter syntax. Anything within {literal}{/literal} tags is not interpreted, but displayed as-is.

Google: Don’t Be Nice!

Google updated PageRank again, and this time, everything is different. The public message is that Google penalized some websites which sell text links, sounds fair? No, Google is slaughtering small websites, IMO.

Google Bigdaddy Update

2006 has been proven to be a bad start for me. Although the sites de-indexed (probable because of the non-www problem) have been re-indexed by Google, but they are treated as brand new sites and can’t out rank a random page which mentions them.

Google Update

Google made a update shortly after my last post. It seemed to revert back to the old search results, as a website I haven’t worked on for months regained top ranking.

Expired Domains

When register a new domain, you should avoid expired domains if possible. Google bans expired domains automatically, which will leave your website out of Google’s index for at least 6 months.

What’s a good PR?

Google PageRank (PR) update seems to have settled down. New webmasters may wonder what a good PR is.

PR is updating

Google is updating PR. The toolbar may still show the old PR as the data is being propagated across their data centers.

Google Update

Google PageRank (PR) update is coming…may be within one or two days.

Matt Cutts (aka GoogleGuy) is a Google engineer and his posts can be considered official speaking of Google. If you don’t know Google update yet, check out his Blog “What’s an update?” and more info on updates.
